At SUITS, we understand the importance of competition in motivating students to improve. That’s why we offer opportunities for students to participate in tournaments and other competitive events, both locally and nationally. These events provide students with the chance to put their skills to the test and to meet other Weiqi enthusiasts from around the region and the country.

Why Play Weiqi/Go

Weiqi, also known as Go, is a strategic board game that originated in ancient China more than 2,500 years ago. Over the centuries, it has become popular not only in China, but also in other Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.

In recent decades, Weiqi has also gained popularity in the Western world, with players and enthusiasts from all over the globe participating in international tournaments and competitions. In fact, Weiqi has been recognized as an official sport by the International Olympic Committee, and it is expected to make its debut as a demonstration sport at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Weiqi is played on a 19×19 board with black and white stones, and the goal is to surround and capture your opponent’s stones while protecting your own. The game is deceptively simple, yet complex strategies can arise from seemingly simple moves.

One of the unique aspects of Weiqi is that it has no element of chance, and the outcome of the game is entirely dependent on the skill and strategy of the players. This has led to Weiqi being compared to other strategy games such as chess, but many consider Weiqi to be more complex and subtle.

The international popularity of Weiqi has led to the formation of numerous national and international organizations dedicated to promoting and developing the game. These organizations organize tournaments, conduct research, and promote Weiqi as a cultural and educational activity.

Our Program is not just board and stones

We strive to make learning inspiring, engaging, and fun. It’s important for us that you understand the logic and principles of Weiqi/Go, not just mindlessly memorize sequences.
